About the Expert / Mentor
Professional Violinist and Violin Teacher / Coach, Calvin Tsang, who hails also from Austin, Texas, and Chicago (IL), where he completed Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Violin Performance (Northwestern University), has been featured as a soloist on Charlotte's very own classical radio station, W-DAV, in the series, "Mainstreet Sessions" performing a virtuosic show-piece Zigeunerweisen by Sarasate (you can listen to this sample under "Repertoire"). Applying a balanced methodical approach, Calvin also has had over 15 years of experience teaching/ mentoring violin students of all ages and levels and is currently accepting new students in Vaughan / Richmond Hill / Markham / North York and Toronto area (Suzuki / RCM ) and beyond. A former student of renowned pedagogue Almita Vamos, he has also performed with various high-level US orchestras, including San Diego Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, Virginia Symphony and Des Moines Metro Opera and collaborated with members of Toronto Symphony & Canadian Opera Company. During his orchestra career, he had the honor to perform in concerts alongside the following classical music superstars: Joshua Bell, Leila Josefowicz, Lang-Lang, and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg as well as famous conductors including Barenboim, William Eddins, David Robertson, Hans Graf, and Jahja Ling, among others. Starting lessons at the age of 8, he quickly became a rising star, being interviewed by Austin's local TV station only 2 years later. In his formative years, he garnered many honors/awards, including performing as concertmasters of his local school, region orchestras and most notably, that of Texas' All-State Orchestra only as a high school freshman. In his spare time, he is a weather buff and enjoys watching America's Got Talent. He dreams one day to be featured as a talent show panel judge :)
Calvin is a CFM/AFM (Canadian Federation of Musicians) union musician, has been Associate Concertmaster with Orchestra London (Ontario), and has also performed with Niagara Symphony, Hamilton Symphony, London Symphonia, Windsor Symphony, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, & Canada Sinfonietta.
